Humans have created art for thousands of years as a way of expressing themselves, allowing ideas that are difficult to articulate to be shared with others. We are visual beings, and visual arts communicate with us in ways that words cannot. Photography as a medium appeals to me for several reasons, but the most important is that it is an image of a real moment. What my viewers experience is something that existed not only in my mind, but also for only a fleeting moment in reality. I find that irresistable, and its something about other mediums that I find lacking. Perhaps my images are proof for myself of something that I feel when standing there with my camera.

My photography reflects my vision of reality, and thus carries a great deal of my personality while also directly reflecting my own paradigm of the universe. My vision is not always a happy one; I seek to capture the dark and foreboding images that skirt the edges of many people’s worlds. I try and capture those moments that are simultaneously disturbing and captivating. I frequently find my inspiration for images in places that have been left to the ravages of time, and that as a child might be terrifying and disturbing. I like to visit these places by myself even though I admit that many times I find the experience quite unsettling. The more people around, the harder it is to find that plane somewhere between reality and the supernatural.

I've tried to seek my own path with my artwork, to explore my own uncharted territory of images -- but you can always point to the sources of such inspiration. I studied Neil Folberg's work in my very first photography class, and I found it to be captivating and enchanting -- his infrared photography is absolutely stunning. I enjoy these surreal sort of images that he creates, it reminds me visions that come in dreams otherworldly and awe inspiring. I've also been influence strongly by Michael Kenna and Ansel Adams who's work is something that I aspire towards and try to hold myself to that standard.
